‘Boncafe Route to Root’ blends innovative sustainable
approach to farmer’s coffee wisdom
On its auspicious 31 st anniversary, Boncafe (Thailand) Co., Ltd. hosted Boncafe – Route to Root
for its valued customers to survey and learn about the coffee processing journey. Held at
Thepsadej Coffee Farm, Chiang Mai during 15-17 December 2022, the session heard farmers
and Boncafe experts focus on enhancing sun-dried coffee field operation and saw them
innovate a coffee berry borer trap to capture pests that destroy coffee beans.
Led by Boncafe (Thailand) Co., Ltd. in collaboration with coffee presenter Dr. Jeab Lalana Kongtoranin and trip sponsor Bangkok Airways, the journey imparted coffee knowledge and insights, including coffee processing from seed to cup. The session featured coffee cherry collecting, washing, sun-drying, bean bleaching, roasting, and cupping for tasting the quality of coffee. Thus the meticulous processes and refining methods of coffee production before delivering the finest cup of coffee for consumers were highlighted.
As Boncafe supports coffee farmers, the knowledge and operational process development focuses on LTLH (Low Temperature and Low Humidity Drying) contributing to the sun-drying site at Thepsadej Coffee Farm. LTLH is a sun-drying practice in low temperatures and low humidity in closed-spaces where temperature is controlled. A new concept of drying as a solution to frequent downpours caused by climate change was also showcased. The innovative approach helps preserve quality and sets guidelines to prevent possible impact on coffee regeneration.
At the event, “Coffee Berry Borer traps” demonstrated recycling used water bottles as the key material to help farmers battle berry borers, coffee’s worst enemy and a crucial factor undermining coffee berry production and quality. Boncafe (Thailand) Co., Ltd. is acclaimed for its sustainable operations and commitment to supporting Thai coffee farmers so they can thrive and growth while delivering the best coffee quality to consumers.
